Faro to Tavira November 18th 2024

After a hearty breakfast (two small pancakes each with a slice of banana, Nutella and strawberry jam, three half ham and cheese sandwiches, a juice and a coffee!), I headed south and east for Tavira. As I didn’t have much distance to cover, I took detours (too many detours) to take photos of graffiti enroute. The start of the ride was on a small road along the coast then I stubbled almost by accident on the famous Eurovélo n°1! It is a sand track which largely runs alongside the railway. Then I lost it again and took a path a little further inland but not before seeing the Dead Sea! I won’t say more, do your research.

Just when I was starting to get discouraged, I stumbled upon Restaurante ‘O Forno’, a roadside shack in Luz de Tavira where I ordered a breaded steak with rice and fries accompanied by a huge glass of red wine. I was full and ready to take a nap rather than continue but I found the Eurovélo n°1 again which as now a gravel path. It’s at times like this that we’re happy to have big Swalbe tires. I finally, I arrived after 3:00 p.m. at the Quinta da Capelinha (the name refers to the small church at the entrance of the farm). 2 hours and 44 minutes of actual movement but closer to 5 hours in all with my multiple stops to take pictures and replenish.

Here is my ride with Strava.

I was too tired to return to Tavira to visit. The view from the farm over the area is absolutely spectacular and the only sounds are the crickets, an occasional dog barking and a few tourists chatting. The only downside is that I had to walkHere are my photos of the day in ‘Slide Show’ mode. Tomorrow I have booked a houseboat in Albufeira, which means I have to travel about 75 kilometers.
